In 1885 the 1st successful appendectomy is performed in Davenport, Iowa by Dr. William W. (West) Grant, 38. He diagnosed a perforated appendix in Mary Gartside, 22. He is the first physician in America or Europe deliberately to open the abdomen and sever the appendix from the cecum.
He used a procedure developed by Dr. Charles McBurney in 1884. Dr. McBurney discovered a tender pressure point important in the diagnosis of appendicitis. It is now know as 'McBurney's point'.
I still have my appendix.
